Between the Alps and the plains of the Veneto, Italy's largest lake spreads out in a basin of pale limestone and cypress, where the water shifts from deep sapphire to turquoise beneath the sun. Wander the arcaded lanes of Sirmione, its castle rising on a narrow spit above the water, or climb through Malcesine to the medieval Scaligero fortress that watches over the eastern shore. Ride the cable car up Monte Baldo for views across the whole lake to the Dolomites beyond.
