Sicily rises from the Mediterranean where three seas meet, an island shaped by Greek settlers, Arab traders, and Norman kings who each left their mark upon its soil. Volcanic and sunbaked, it wears its long history openly, layers of civilisation stacked like the terraces of its hillside towns.
Climb toward Mount Etna, whose smouldering peak watches over vineyards and pistachio groves, or stand before the Greek temples of Agrigento's Valley of the Temples. In Palermo, the Norman mosaics of the Cappella Palatina glimmer with Byzantine gold, while Noto and Ortigia unfold in honeyed baroque stone. Along the coast, the cliffs of Taormina frame views across the Ionian Sea.
