This is the original patent drawing for the golf tee, granted to George F. Grant on 12 December 1899 as US 638,920. The sheet shows the little tapered spike in careful detail, its cup cradling the ball a precise fraction above the turf — a small idea that changed the opening shot of every hole forever.
There's real charm in seeing so modest an object treated with such seriousness, a reminder that even the tiniest piece of kit began as somebody's bright idea, drawn and numbered and filed with pride.
